Kozkattas - 1

Kozkattas  the yummy golf size balls stuffed with coconut and jaggery with the flavor of cardamom inside is a absolute treat your tongue.  Ganesh chathurthi takes me back to my  childhood days, there used to be ganesha kept in every nook and corner of the colony where I lived and in the evenings would  go and visit all the ganesha and during the visarjan time oh its fun, we girls would make a team and go to the temple and see the visarjan and return home with loads of explanations to tell my mom how each Ganesha looked like.

We normally don’t celebrate at my mom’s place Ganesh chathurthi, but by the time its afternoon we would get so many  goodies from different houses in and around  - thanks to my lovely neighbours.  We would get  so many types of kozkattas. Some are round shape, tiny coconut shaped and some like logs and they were stuffed with different fillings too.  I loved the coconut shaped ones as they looked so cute.

Now at my place  here  I make it a point to celebrate all the festivals be Hindu, Christian or a Muslim (Sarva dharma).  I make it a point to make Kozkattas and Sundal for Ganesh Chathruthi and that’s our breakfast for that day.  Since I was away from my home this time I could not make but  I made this morning for the prasadam (offerings) to Gods.

I got a beautiful mould from Pune (tiny coconut shaped), so cute the kozhkattas looked but indeed yummy too  and irresistible they are.
The first variety of the  recipe goes here:

Ingredients
For the stuffing:

Fresh grated coconut: 1 cup
Jaggery grated or powdered : ¾ cup
Cardamom powder: a pinch

For the outer shell:

Rice flour: 1 ½ cups *
Cooking oil: 2tsp.
Water – ½                                                                                                                                              Salt: a pinch
*I used double horse idiyappam powder

Method

Lets make the stuffing:

Keep the jaggery, coconut in a plate separately. After you make the  outer shell and when you are ready to stuff in this only then mix the rice, coconut and cardamom powder and stuff this into the rice shells. If you make the mix earlier and keep as the moisture in the coconut will make the stuffing soggy.
Now we will make the outer rice shells or coatings:

Use a pot and add water and then salt and let it  boil nicely. In another pan keep the rice flour, add the boiling  water into the rice flour little by little, use a spoon and mix the batter like chapathi batter consistency.  When it cools down a bit  use your hand and  mix the rice dough well, add little oil to your hands if its sticking and nicely make a ball.
To prepare kozhkattas:

Take a lime sized portion of the rice mix and form a round using your hands. Smear little oil on your finger tips to make it easier to handle the dough. Put a smaller size ball of the coconut stuffing inside and close from all sides and make a ball like shape. Repeat till all the dough and stuffing is used up. Steam the kozhkattas in a idli steamer  for 15 minutes.

Enjoy this lip smacking kozhkattas!!
