Idli Podi - mixed lentils with spices

For me this is one of the must in my kitchen as it saves my time so much.

This is an accompaniment which goes very well with dosa and idli.  A handy podi (powder) homemade powder for a ready to use  during breakfast.

As I fry the dals, the aroma from my kitchen is filled in the entire house, smells too good of the rice, mixed dals and the spices.

There are several brands selling this powder in the market. However, I never pick from the store and I like to make my own.  Its really handy for me during the morning rush hours when I don’t get time to make a good chutney.

Infact you can make nice idli upma with this powder. It tastes yummy!!

Ingredients

Idli Rice  - 1 glass (in case you  are using the raw rice and boiled rice then use 50:50)                                    Urud dal – 2 tbps                                                                                                                                 Channa Dal – ¼ cup                                                                                                                               White sesame seeds – 1 tbsp                                                                                                                        Red chillie – to your spice level                                                                                                                Curry leaves – 3 sprigs                                                                                                                        Asafetida – ¼ tsp                                                                                                                                     Salt to taste

Method:

In a pan,  dry roast all the ingredients separately to golden brown, except the asafetida and salt. Cool the ingredients and use your mixer  and powder (not too fine) this mixture and keep this in a air tight  container after you mix well.

Ensure you fry the red chillie in the last as you don’t have to fry too long.

You may mix this powder with coconut oil/ghee/ sesame oil and enjoy this with your favorite idli n dosa. As you dip you should feel the crunchy bites of the dals and rice here and there J.
